CUSTOMIZED MENUS FOR DMAIC |
<<BACK |
The
customized menu capability in JMP lets you create
the user interface that fits the needs of the user
and the organization. A customized interface might
mean removing or hiding some features of JMP in some
settings, or it might mean adding analytics specific
to the organization. In this way, the menu system in
JMP can be reduced, increased and changed. To help
support rapid culture change associated with Six
Sigma, the language in the tool itself should
support the production and quality methodology
language you are using. For example, when your
company uses specialized terminology, your
analytical tool should be able to incorporate that
terminology in its interface. If your organization
has international locations or contractors, menu
customization allows you to build menu systems that
are translated into the local language.
Figure 1 displays a JMP menu that includes a Six
Sigma Tools menu that is not part of the
standard menu system, but is available at no cost to
people licensing JMP. The Six Sigma
Tools menu item is added to the default JMP menu.
The menu system organizes some of the analytics in
JMP according to the familiar DMAIC roadmap, and
might be deployed after a group of Six Sigma
practitioners have received streamlined training.
The menu system contains a focused set of choices.
The benefit of tailoring the analytical tool set to
a specific role is reduced training time and reduced
chances for a practitioner to select the wrong
tools.

to analytics suited to a particular audience or
business purpose.

The Six Sigma Tools menu was created and deployed
using some simple steps that can be used to create
other menus specific to your organizational needs.
First, a graphical mockup of the interface is
invoked that is akin to a drawing environment where
menu headings and subheadings can be changed,
deleted, or moved around. To invoke the menu editing
system, the user selects Customize from the File
menu and then selects Choose Menus. A mockup version
of the menu interface then appears for the user to
change, delete or edit the names of existing menu
items to names that make sense in the context of
your business. Finally, when the edits to the menu
system are completed, the menus can be deployed
seamlessly to all JMP users. The menu file itself
resides in the JMP home directory by default and is
named JMP-E.JMPCMD. This file contains the
information that builds the menu system when JMP
starts up. Through the use of a preference in JMP,
all users can have standardized menus that are
tailored to their role and use of JMP. This menu
file can be stored on a server so that when JMP
starts up these users get the menu system that is
supported by the organization and by the
methodology.

customization is accessible from the Edit menu. Menu
